THE WRITING STUDIO

In his one-room writing studio, surrounded by artifacts from remote Indigenous cultures the world over, Matthiessen penned his most iconic novels, including Men’s Lives, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, The Tree Where Man Was Born, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, Nine-Headed Dragon River, The Snow Leopard and Shadow Country–the last two for which he won National Book Awards, the only author to do so for fiction and non-fiction.
