THE GROUNDS

Adding to the character of historic Sagaponack, the grounds of the former Matthiessen property are truly exquisite. Bringing to mind a bygone era when the East End consisted primarily of family farms, forests and endless coastline, the Center will reestablish the property’s famously beautiful grounds–a captivating blend of cultivated and wild habitat.

 WALKING MEDITATION GARDEN

A space for Zen practitioners and residency participants to enjoy the many mature trees, native plant species and natural ecosystem that coexist, the garden will provide a serene environment for those who wish to practice walking meditation or tai chi. This interactive space may include a sand garden, rock stupas and wind chimes–the way it was initially created for Matthiessen’s Zendo practitioners.

 NATIVE PLANT MEADOW

The meadow will provide a home to the many native plant species for a greater ecological benefit. By restoring the many existing ancient trees and adding fauna native to the East End, the meadow will serve as a site for ecological and indigenous plant knowledge by means of occasional guest lectures and workshops - benefitting the local community.  The space will also provide protection to important pollinators (bees, butterflies, and birds).
